The Best Park City Fishing Spots

For anglers looking to land that trophy fish or just to spend a pleasant day on the water, Park City fishing spots have it all. From snow-fed mountain lakes and streams to state parks with huge bodies of water, you can try your hand at a different fly fishing or ice fishing spot each week. If you’re ready to gear up and explore, you should cast your line near Park City. Below you’ll find some of the best options in the area.

The Best Fly Fishing Spots Near Park City

Fly fishing is a great way to get out in nature and enjoy the pristine Utah wilderness. Park City has excellent fly fishing venues, including:

  • The Provo River. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has designated Provo River a Blue Ribbon fishery for the high quality of its fishing and it’s considered among the best spots in the country for anglers. Here, you can try your hand at streamer, fly, or nymph fishing to catch the river’s famously huge rainbow trout, trophy brown trout, and other species. If you love the experience of fishing solo, you’ll appreciate that the more than 15 miles of angling spots along the river include shaded pools and some remote spots where you can spend pleasant afternoons. With more than 3,000 trout per mile and the average fish measuring 18 inches or more, expect a good catch. The Lower Provo in particular is excellent for catching some of the biggest rainbows and browns in Utah. Easy access points from US Highway 89 mean you can practically see fishing areas from the parking spots. You don’t have to go far to land a trophy trout.

  • The Weber River. Located between the Echo and Rockport reservoirs, is also a Blue Ribbon fishery, offering plenty of fish per mile. High-mountain cutthroat, rainbow trout, and brown trout swim in this river. Both the Weber and Provo see plenty of pressure, making flies plentiful for the fish, especially near the bottom, where the trout tend to stay. This makes both rivers a terrific spot for dry fly fishing and nymph fishing.

  • The Strawberry River. Something of a hidden gem, the Strawberry River is about one hour outside of Park City, it doesn’t see as many anglers as some of the other fishing areas in this region, so if you’re looking for a relaxing day far from anyone else, Strawberry River is a great choice. Expect a catch of large rainbow trout, cutthroat, mountain whitefish, and kokanee salmon.

  • The Uinta Mountains. This locale offers stunning views and plenty of small rivers and streams to explore. This can be the right spot for you if you’re not looking for large fish but want a fast fishing experience without seeing many other anglers nearby. The fish here are eager for food and aren’t picky. The mountain is not accessible in the winter, and the most popular fishing season here is from late June to late September. Bear River and its streams offer the fastest trout catch rates in Utah. Locations such as Mirror Lake Highway and North Slope Roadside Lakes are popular with local anglers for rainbows, brook trout, grayling, and tiger trout. These areas are accessible and well-managed, with multiple fish stockings.

If you’re looking for larger bodies of water, though, Park City has plenty of Reservoirs to help you catch that next monster fish.

The Reservoirs Near Park City

There are a few larger bodies of water near Park City, well worth the drive for world-class fishing experiences. Starvation Reservoir, despite its name, offers anything but starvation for the walleye, kokanee salmon, crappie, rainbow trout, yellow perch, brown trout, and bluegill that live in its waters. Each year anglers land trout of over ten pounds from Starvation Reservoir. The park surrounding Starvation Reservoir has camping areas, boat ramps, and fish cleaning stations and offers views of the Uinta Mountains.

  • Jordanelle Reservoir. Located in Jordanelle State Park is flatwater fed by the Provo River. It’s home to trophy-sized smallmouth bass and brown trout as well as perch, largemouth bass, cutthroat trout, and rainbow trout. It’s not uncommon for anglers to catch brown trout of up to ten pounds and smallmouth bass larger than seven pounds. This is one of the most popular Park City fishing spots and only a short drive from Benloch Ranch.

  • Echo Reservoir. About forty minutes outside of Park City, Echo Reservoir offers deep waters with excellent fishing if you’re looking for rainbows and brown trout. You can also find smallmouth bass, perch, carp, or catfish nearer to shore. This is also a great place for ice fishing.

  • Rockport Reservoir. A great spot for rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, brown trout, and yellow perch, Rockport Reservoir is always a great option for anglers. If you go in spring and fall you’ll probably catch fish no matter your experience level, and catching rainbows of over 20 inches is common here. During the winter, the reservoir is a terrific spot for ice fishing.

  • East Canyon Reservoir. With its cold, snow-fed waters, East Canyon Reservoir is designated as a Blue Ribbon fishery. It is plentiful in rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and wiper and it’s possible to catch brown trout, splake, black crappie, kokanee salmon, and tiger trout. The lake is accessible year-round and ice fishing is popular in the winter. The surrounding East Canyon State Park also has rivers, streams, and lakes to explore as well as fish cleaning stations.

Anglers willing to drive beyond the Park City area can find even more streams, rivers, lakes, and waterways to fish. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has an online fishing spot portal where you can find fishing locations, forecasts, and more.
